GRU administers these programs to meet the diverse needs of our community. They aim to educate and support STEM education, conservation, volunteerism, charity, diversity and children.

Bikes-N-Bytes

In 2017, GRU and engineering firm Jacobs began the program to donate computers and bikes to local students excelling in STEM classes. We partner with Williams Elementary and the Caring and Sharing Learning School to identify deserving students.

Brighter Tomorrow

The Brighter Tomorrow Scholarship Program was established in 2009. GRU partners with the Education Foundation to provide scholarships to high school students in underrepresented demographics pursuing engineering degrees at the University of Florida or Santa Fe College.  GRU has committed $124,000 to 31 engineering students attending these institutions.

Camp EmPower

Started in 2012, Camp EmPower is a free spring break camp for middle school students. The camp gives them an in-depth look at the careers and expertise of GRU. Students learn about the utility and how to obtain the skills and education needed to work in the industry.

Charitable Campaign

GRU and other city departments launched the first City of Gainesville Charitable Campaign in 2017, raising $55,195 for more than 120 nonprofits.

Diversity Awareness Council

The purpose of the Diversity Awareness Council is to raise awareness and celebrate diversity and inclusion within GRU. Monthly luncheons are held to explore the past, discover shared experiences and be a catalyst for inclusion and equity in the workplace.

Employee Volunteer Network

GRU’s Employee Volunteer Network was created in 2017 as a way for GRU employees to give back to the community through volunteerism. More than 90 volunteers work with over 40 local nonprofits through the program. Employees have logged more than 1,700 volunteer hours since April 2018, a cumulative impact of $41,000 in our community.

EngiNear YOU

GRU’s EngiNear YOU science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education program introduces engineering concepts to elementary, middle and high school students through educational tours and interactive activities.

GRU in the Neighborhood

Our Community Relations department partners with Customer Service, Energy and Business Services and senior leadership at community meetings throughout the year to empower customers with the information and tools to manage their utility costs.

LEEP

GRU’s Low-income Energy Efficiency Program (LEEP) assists low-income customers with home improvements that can lower their electric bill, improve comfort and reduce energy use. On average, the program provides $4,250 of approved upgrades to each home.

Payment Arrangements

GRU customer service works with individual accounts to find payment arrangements that work for the customer.  These include payment installments, personal hardship extensions and our Summer Extension program.

Pop-Up Camp

GRU partners with General Government to host a free, pop-up camp that aims to keep local kids physically and mentally active during summer break.

Project SHARE

Project SHARE began over 30 years ago as a payment assistance program using voluntary donations from customers and employees. These funds provide assistance to GRU customers who qualify for emergency support due to financial hardship. Since 2007, Project SHARE has raised $835,538.

Williams Golf Tournament

GRU has partnered with Williams Elementary School for over 20 years. Proceeds from this annual event support students at Williams Elementary School and in previous years have helped pay for classroom supplies and field trips. Since the tournament’s first event, GRU has raised more than $200,000.
